Number


Place Value is the amount a digit is worth due to its position in a number, ie, ones, twins, hundreds, thousands etc.
1. Watch this Khan Academy clip to revise what you already know about Place Value.


2. Download the Place Value Chart to complete the following activity.
You will need: 
  • A deck of playing cards (Ace = 1, Joker = 0, make sure the 10's, Jacks, Queens and Kings have been removed)
  • Place Value Chart - open in Notability
  • A3 Numbers to 999 999 999 chart
  • Pencil
Instructions: 
  • Starting with the youngest person in the group, turn over 9 playing cards to make a 9 digit number.
  • All group members write the number on the place value chart. 
  • Say the number aloud.
  • Complete the Numbers to 999 999 999 chart for each number by writing the number that is 10 more, 10 less etc...)
  • Compare your answers with your group members - if they differ, find out why and have another go!
  • Repeat until each person has had a turn making a number.

3. Now that you're an expert, use Explain Everything or Edu Creations to show your understanding of Place Value. Include a definition, examples and diagrams.


4. Now, use the deck of cards and play The Six Digit Number Game with a partner.
(Open the file in Notability and follow the instructions.) Have fun!

'Near Doubles' Strategy

Doubling is a quick way of adding. You can use doubling to make addition easier. 
Watch this clip to learn how!

Now click on the link below, download the file to your Maths folder in Notability and answer these questions using the Near Doubles Strategy.

'Compensation' Strategy
The Compensation Strategy is a bit like doing Near Doubles because you change one of the digits to make addition easier.
1. Watch the clip below.
2. Towards the end you will be asked to PAUSE and complete the practise activity.
3. Complete the activity in your grid book (with the heading and the date!).
4. Press PLAY and mark your work.


Now, complete questions 2 and 3 on page 10 in Notability using the Compensation Strategy.

'Split' Strategy
The next addition strategy we are learning about is the Split Strategy. Watch the following clip. Remember to PAUSE and complete the activity in your grid book and then press PLAY to mark your work.



Now complete questions 1 a) and b) on page 11 to practise the Split Strategy.

'Jump' Strategy
When you use the Jump Strategy you expand one of the numbers and jump along in quick easy steps.
Watch the clip below. Don't forget to PAUSE to complete the activity and then press PLAY to mark your work.


Now complete questions 2 a) and b) on page 11 to practise the Jump Strategy.
Then you can complete question 3 using a strategy of your choice - remember to name the strategy you used and show all of your working out on a new page if necessary.
