Watch this clip about sprinter Catherine Freeman's victory in the 400 metre final on 25 September 2000 at the Sydney Olympic Games. Read the accompanying text.
Why do you think that this was such a significant event for many Australians?
I think that this was such a significant event for Australia because they weren't reconised in the Olympics. And for aboriginals because they have not been in the Olympics much and to win the Olympics 400m it changed the thought of Australia and aborigines.
I think it was such a significant event for Australia because everyone was counting on it because it was our chance to be recognised as a winning country and to be a multicultural society, Cathy Freeman is a true winner and she was the first aboriginal lady to win gold in her own country.
Catherine Freeman was the first aboriginal to get a gold medal in the Olympics also Australia was not seen as a track and field country but she has changed a lot of minds.
